Real Locomotives
Title:  Real Locomotives
Description:  A pair of 51-year old ex-CNJ GP40Ps are ready to lead NJ Transit's "Railmen for Children" west on the Boonton Line for a trip to Port Morris Yard and back. The lead engine is one of NJ Transit's three newest heritage locomotives paying tribute to the Central Railroad of New Jersey. There's something about the look of a 2nd generation standard cab EMD that just say "Locomotive" to me. I grew up when NJ Transit was in the process of ordering a ton of GP40 rebuilds and almost all the Conrail trains that ran through my hometown of Rutherford were all EMD GP and SD power until the C40-8Ws started to show up. Personally I like the modern appearance of a lot of the newer power that on the rails today but no matter how technology advances as time goes by whenever someone says the world "locomotive" the image that pops up in my head is a GP40.

GP40Ps on the Waterfront
Title:  GP40Ps on the Waterfront
Description:  The Central Railroad of New Jersey had already closed their Jersey City waterfront terminal by the time their iconic GP40Ps arrived in October of 1968. For almost 15 years these engines would exclusively run trains over the former CNJ lines that terminated at Newark Penn Station and Hudson Yard. However, by 1983 things started to change as Conrail officially handed over commuter rail operations to New Jersey Transit. Before long the 13 ex-CNJ GP40Ps would finally taste the salty air of New York Harbor albeit from Lackawanna rails and in NJDOT or NJ Transit colors. As time went by their presence on the Hoboken Division would become more and common as they were modified from steam generators to HEP motors. Upon returning from their early-'90s Altoona rebuilds these locomotives would almost exclusively call the DL&W and Erie rails of the Hoboken Division home with the occasional visit to CNJ rails. It wouldn't be until late 2019 that one of the 13 would wear "CNJ" paint inspired by their as-delivered appearance this close to New York City.

Gloomy Times
Title:  Gloomy Times
Description:  Its a gloomy morning in Hoboken and everything might seem like "business as usual" but that would be far from the truth. In the weeks since the COVID-19 pandemic has had its grip on the world one of its largest cities has grinded to a halt. Empty trains sit in vacant stations waiting for the few souls who still rely on the reduced service to get around. The normally busy streets that make up the greater New York area resemble those of ghost towns. In a effort to get things back to normal the United States Navy has deployed the "USNS Comfort" from Naval Station Norfolk to Manhattans Pier 90. While it may not be the answer to all the citys problems it comes with space for 1,000 patients that would otherwise end up in already crowded hospitals. The hospital ship was a welcome sight for many as it slowly sailed up the Hudson River with its iconic red crosses.

Garbage Train
Title:  Garbage Train
Description:  A westbound passing through Rutherford with a complete set of Comet IB "ComArrows." These oddball rebuilds werent exactly the definition of a quality rebuild but were a cheat answer to a capacity issue back when they were pull from mothball storage. The entire fleet would be retired by 2008 with nearly half the fleet still surviving in passenger service on Amtrak Californias San Joaquin route. The surviving cars have been extensively rebuilt. The cab car pictured here still survives today as CDTX 5010 "The Golden Gate."

Licking the Wounds
Title:  Licking the Wounds
Description:  On a sunny Friday morning Train #6611 arrives at Dover Station while mechanical forces address some mild damage to the 4110 from an incident the night before. About 12 hours earlier the 4110 was returning home to Dover on YD-43 with a handful of equipment from the MMC when they hit a stalled car carrier truck stranded over Station Road crossing at Mount Tabor station. Thankfully no serious injuries came of the incident to both crew and the public. The following morning as the rush neared its end the engine was spotted at the east end of S-6 in Dover Yard to place it close to the yards machine shop. Mechanical forces spent the better part of the morning welding the rear pilot of the 52-year old ex-CNJ veteran to make her roadworthy again.

Send In the Reserves
Title:  Send In the Reserves
Description:  As NJ Transit continues to work through the testing phases of PTC across the system the commuter railroad has found itself short of power. In an effort to alleviate the stress of the demands of the PTC program a pair of unlikely veterans have been pulled from the benches to take a few swings. Train #1171 departs Hoboken on a later summer afternoon with NJ Transit's last two active F40s, the 4119 and 4120. "The Twins" were paired up on this train as part of a shakedown run in their first revenue passenger runs in years without any other HEP-equipped power to assist. The plan was to let them run a fairly simple cycle of trains for a few days so they can be easily monitored. If all went well both would be split apart and released into active service by themselves. Unfortunately the 4119 suffered a minor failure that only allowed it to run a single round trip. The following morning both engines were removed and sent back to the MMC with the intention of returning as soon as the issues are resolved.

Twilight Twins
Title:  Twilight Twins
Description:  Minutes after the sun slipped below the horizon NJ Transit's "twins" rumble across the Hackensack River with Train #1171 to Suffern, NY at HX Drawbridge. The pair have been running together for most of the week as part of an ongoing effort alleviate the stresses of NJ Transit's PTC testing program. With so many locomotives tied up in daily testing these two "retired" veterans have been filling in for passenger service out of Hoboken. The 4119 would suffer a mechanical failure later in this run that once again makes an uncertain future for this pair in passenger service.

Behind Hudson Tower
Title:  Behind Hudson Tower
Description:  NJ Transit's Central Railroad of New Jersey heritage locomotive leads Train #807 west behind the Pennsylvania Railroad's Hudson Tower on Lackawanna rails. Back in 1968 when the 4109 was CNJ 3677 it was no stranger to this neighborhood. The only difference being it would be on the other side of Hudson Tower. Since the CNJ's GP40P never made it to their waterfront terminal (cut off by the Aldene Plan) they only ever used the Pennsylvania Railroad's Newark Penn Station as their final stop. After the trains were cleared they would venture just a bit further east to Harrison where they would clear up the PRR's Hudson Yard to prepare for the return trip to Raritan or Bay Head.

Autumn Comes to the Rails
Title:  Autumn Comes to the Rails
Description:  Autumn officially arrives on NJ Transit when the "AquaTrain" hits the rails. Think of it as a gigantic power washer that's sprays extremely high-pressure water at the head of the rails. This washes away the oily residues left behind by crushed leaves and blows those that haven't been crushed away to fight the delays and damages caused by wheelslip. This odd looking train can be found running almost 24 hours a day from the beginning of October to the middle of December on the Hoboken Division. It spends most of its time on the former Lackawanna electrified lines but does occasionally wander over to the Erie side. The Newark division has their own based out of Raritan that runs Monday-Friday and occasionally visits the North Jersey Coast Line on weekends.

Back from the Dead... Kinda
Title:  Back from the Dead... Kinda
Description:  While its only filling in as a "cab car," one of NJ Transits "new" dinosaurs got a chance to stretch its legs today on the first regularly scheduled trains its been a part of since September 27, 2013. This old screamer and its sister, 4120, are currently the only two F40s left on NJ Transits roster that actually run and two of three left on the property. For the last few years both have been either stored OOS or demoted to utility and yard work with the 4118 sitting dead in storage at the MMC. The remainder of the 17 ordered new for the agency in October of 1981 (the first new locomotive order actually placed by NJT) have all been sold off to new homes across the country. Some for scrap, some to tourist railroads and others to experimental rebuilders. Four of which still run on NJ Transit rails but are now owned by Metro-North for their West-of-Hudson service. This eastbound train is seen here zipping by Amtraks Hudson Tower in some crunchy morning light under Lackawanna wire on the return trip to Hoboken. Supplying HEP on the other end of the train is NJTR 4202, one of four of the oldest engines on the current roster being built for the New York Central in October of 1965.

Title:  Jersey Arrows Below Grade
Description:  Five of New Jerseys iconic Arrow III MUs destined for the rural hills of Somerset County zip west through the Lackawanna Railroads historic Roseville Cut. This feat of railroad engineering was part of a massive grade separation project started in 1901 to remove all at-grade road crossings on the Morris & Essex branch between Newark and South Orange with a combination of cuts, bridges and elevation. Numbers from the Past
Title:  Numbers from the Past
Description:  Today I was lucky enough to acquire a pair of number boards from a long retired and scrapped NJ Transit U34CH. While these boards are not the originals it was delivered to the Erie Lackawanna with in 1971 they still hold significance to me as these are the engines that as a kid blew my mind with their strange sounds and excessive smoke. The 4163 was one of the many U34CHs that wore its original "Blue Bird" NJDOT paint for its entire service career. It only received a handful of paint mods when its ownership was transferred to NJ Transit in 1983. These small changes included painting the the nose "platinum mist" silver and applying a large NJ Transit logo and the removal of the NJDOT blue arrow logo. The fate of this engine seems to be a mystery as to exactly when and where it was scrapped. It appears all that remains of it are these boards unless other collectors were lucky enough to get the horn, bell and the other two boards. I posed the two boards in some saucy afternoon light at HX Drawbridge. A piece of former Erie Lackawanna track this engine crossed probably hundreds of thousands of times in its career. In the background a modern NJ Transit PL42AC crosses the Hackensack River. Time will tell if the retirement of these modern locomotives will be a sorely felt by railfans as the U34s was.

Description:  The day marks 242 years since the Second Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence after already being at war with the Kingdom of Great Britain for over a year. This seemingly quiet, humid night at Hoboken Terminal turned into a roaring thunderstorm of colorful explosions from displays both massive and small in every which way you looked. Just as the huge flowing bursts of light from the Macys East River fireworks display started to decorate the night sky Train #81 was all business as it was just about ready to depart for the long 2½ trip to Port Jervis, NY.

Dueling Toasters
Title:  Dueling Toasters
Description:  SEPTA's “Great Valley Flyer” to Thorndale wastes no time overtaking the Paoli local at Bryn Mayr during the height of the evening rush on Amtrak’s Harrisburg Line. Both trains are powered by a pair of sequentially-numbered AEM7s living on borrowed time. These two tired motors are staring down the barrel of retirement as SEPTA prepares to phase in the newly delivered ACS-64s from Siemens. It appears this summer will be the last for SEPTA's toasters.

The Other P&W
Title:  The Other P&W
Description:  Did you know there's a P&W on the West Coast? Well... Now you do! The Portland & Western, now like its east coast "cousin," is a G&W short-line based out of the Portland/Vancouver area. On a really crappy Afternoon in Vancouver the seasonal weather doesn't disappoint as P&W 633 (running as F PWVAAB1 19T on BNSF) round the curve at Vancouver's Amtrak Station about to cross the Columbia River Bridge into Portland with a trio of orange geeps. Thanks to the orange EMDs and some colorful #SCE I managed to capture a color other than grey while foaming that day.

A Rough Night on the Lehigh Line
Title:  A Rough Night on the Lehigh Line
Description:  Its was a terribly stormy night in South Plainfield, NJ on this March evening. In the midst of a powerful noreaster a westbound CSX Q417 holds just east of the Front Street crossing with an ex-Conrail SD80MAC on the point. All the railroads in North Jersey were taking a beating based on all the radio chaos and Conrails Lehigh Line was no exception. NS 65J (who had literally just cleared Front Street a few minutes before) was reporting they were in emergency after a car drove through the gates and into the north side of their trailing engine at Clinton Avenue just a few miles ahead. This mess caused all traffic on the Lehigh Line to grind to a stop as the powerful storm raged on. A few moments after stopping the conductor of the Q417 emerged from the beastly 5,000HP engine and told us about their adventurous trip from Newarks Oak Island Yard. What was normally an easy journey of less than 30 miles turned into an 8+ hour escapade. Faced with signal problems, multiple crossing failures and downed trees obstructing the rails this crew was not going to set any speed records on tonights trip. The delay caused by the disabled NS 65J was the final nail in the coffin and a few short hours later they hit the 12-hour mark and expired on the main. This train and its stranded crew spent the remainder of the night weathering the storm waiting on a fresh crew to relieve them and try again the following morning.

Pressed Into Passenger
Title:  Pressed Into Passenger
Description:  As NJ Transit struggles to comply with the federally mandated Positive Train Control requirements many cab cars have become unavailable as they are retrofitted with the new PTC systems. In order to maintain service locomotives have been acting as "cab cars" on the east ends of train all across the system. Sometimes those engines used are those normally reserved for non-revenue work trains such as seen here. Eastbound Train #1204 is seen here just after crossing the Hackensack River at Upper Hack drawbridge and was lead by one of four GP40-2s on the NJ Transit roster. These engines are usually assigned as work and protect power to outlying terminals such as Dover, Long Branch and Morrisville and have rarely been used to power scheduled revenue passenger trains.
